5 Key Habits of Successful People

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

As a Transformational and Mindset coach, I spend a vast amount of time working with my clients to develop their current mindset and to work on reprogramming their belief systems in both themselves (self-esteem) and their abilities to implement positive change within their life.

As part of our diverse discussions, we often talk about their innate desire to become successful or to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. The key questions I always ask is: what does success mean to you? how will you know when you are successful? do you know what you have to start doing to achieve the success you desire?

In order to be 'successful' you have to first have a full understanding of what that process actually looks like. To assist you in gaining more clarity on this; here are 5 action steps that you can begin to work on implementing to help you move towards attaining the SUCCESS you want.

1. Be on time

Time is of the essence and as much as we are often told that we have the same 24 hours as Beyonce Knowles and Oprah, the truth of the matter is this. THEY USE THEIR 24 HOURS DIFFERENTLY. They moved different, to receive a different outcome. When many of their friends were sleeping, they were working throughout the night to make their dreams a reality.

This is why it is VITAL that you develop a strong and positive relationship with time. You need to respect your time and the time of others. Always strive to arrive early for meetings and appointments. Try to schedule your activities in a diary and be strict with how long you give to your allocated time. Never take your time for granted. Be conscious of the time your expend and focus on making your time work for you.

2. Write down your intentions

Many people set goals that they then repeat over in their heads. As much as this is very effective. You give your dreams more substance when you write them down. You give them even more power when you read over them regularly. When you read your own intentions out loud; it is as if you are affirming them and making them clear in your minds eye that you are focused on making them your reality. Writing them down and signing them also makes it official. It is as you are writing a contract to your self and setting clear expectations that you then hold yourself accountable for. Successful people ensure they write their goals down on paper.

3. Read

Yes, there are many people who say they don't like to read or they simply do not have the time to do so. But their is great truth in the saying that 'knowledge is power', The more you read, the more knowledge you can acquire. If you are launching a business, or if you already have a business, if you working on changing careers or want to up-skill on one way or another, there is a book for that. Haven't you noticed that when you watch television interviews with scholars as the main subject, they are always sat positioned in front of a bulging book shelf. For some that may be for the sheer aesthetics, but for the majority of them, they have read every single book more than once! Set a new goal to read more and set aside at least 20 minutes a day to reading a book that will expand your knowledge.

4. Empower Others

Compliment others. If you haven't got anything nice to say don't say anything at all. Avoid starting or listening to gossip. Never ridicule, insult, or make fun of other people. Use positive words, always speaking about what you want and how you want things to be. Avoid suggesting motives or assigning judgments for other people's actions and views. Consider: Discourtesy damages all relationships. A success driven person doesn't have time to slander or bitch about things that do not serve them. All of that energy needs to be applied to you and the happenings in your life.

5. Pay it forward

Be a mentor for newcomers. Share ideas. Teach people skills that will help them excel. Work with a spirit of abundance. Seek win/win results. Let others speak first, even on issues where you are an expert. Give first without attaching a receipt for return favours. Consider: Selfish people end up working harder. Try your best to pay it forward where possible, but never at the depletion of the self. You can often feel energised and more motivated when you help others along the way, but only expend energy towards individuals who are deserving of your support and guidance.
