While we might have limitations in terms of what our bodies are capable of and abiding by the rules and regulations of the society we’re in, if there is one place where we should be completely free, then it is in our own minds.
Unfortunately, far too often this is not the reality most of us live in. Instead, our thoughts are dictated by our circumstances and often times they are challenges which are sometimes out of our control. This is why we will often find ourselves feeling dissatisfied and constantly wanting to push forward, rather than taking a moment to be grateful for all that we already have, to smell the roses and to enjoy life.
Are You Happy?
Most of us are constantly in a position of slight dissatisfaction. Our minds are often overrun with thoughts of lack. There’s always some thing that our lives are lacking. Maybe if we had just a little bit more money, if we had a bigger house, could upgrade your car, or be in a better paid and more fulfilling job our lives better and it would help us to be satisfied and happier?
We are constantly being fed and encouraged by the media, print, TV, Internet and social media with a barrage of the material goods that we need to own which will undoubtedly elevate us and enrich our lives .
Hypnotised by the lure, we end up wanting more money so we can wear the latest clothes and post pictures of ourselves on holiday on social media to show to our friends. We want the sleekest car in the neighbourhood to keep up with our neighbours and on and on and we keep working harder and stressing more to try and accomplish these things until that is we become over whelmed with the pressure and increasingly dissatisfied with our lives.
Making a Change
If we were to stop for a moment and un-plug from all the white noise and be honest with ourselves, aren’t there an over excess of footwear and clothes gathering dust in our wardrobes that at one point in time we simply had to own ? Do we really need to upgrade our mobile phones to the latest more expensive model or apply for yet another personal loan to buy a sleeker car which will push your bank balance further into the red just to keep up with the neighbours ?
Isn’t it just really clever marketing and an over indulged ego that is pushing you towards that next 'must haves' and that next expense?
Likewise, ask yourself if having more money would really make you happier. If you find that a change of environment, a higher paid employment in a position with more responsibility and which will advance your career prospects then by all means change your role. Go for it, but ensure it is for the right reasons and that you are not on the never ending treadmill of more, better, best feeding your ego.
"The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now. And the more grateful you are the more you get" Oprah Winfrey
So how do you make a change and start to be freer and happier right now? The answer is that you change your focus. Instead of fixating on what you don’t have and on what you want, begin a daily practice of gratitude and be thankful for the abundance that you already have in your life. Having a ‘gratitude attitude’ is the fastest route to having a satisfying and happy life and to have more of what will truly feed your soul.
